We spend our lives being taught to learn as much as we can, believing that our value is measured by the knowledge we possess and how we can transform that knowledge into tangible achievements. This understanding is systematic, embedded in our perception of life: go to school, figure life out by the ages of 18-20, pursue higher education, and get a job. This structured path aims to navigate the trials and tribulations of life. While there is some truth to this approach, I believe this outdated system is the cause of many issues in modern society. Yes, knowledge is power, but knowledge without discipline is simply arrogance. It is with guided passion and empathy that knowledge becomes wisdom.
I have seen many who have worked hard for their achievements, dedicating their lives to a title, a job, a goal. When they achieve these things, they often become overwhelmed by their accomplishments and lose sight of the heart that kept them gracious. Arrogance grows like the weeds of a neglected garden, spreading quickly to consume the mind, body, and soul. Where compassion once lay, impatience takes root. Knowledge can lead to money and wealth, but only with discipline will it avoid the path to greed.
Ultimately, knowledge is the root of everything you want in life, everything that could be great. However, it can also be the reason you aren’t where you want to be. Knowledge is taught to us as if it were linear: the more you learn, the smarter you become. But eventually, you must understand that life is like a glass of water. Our cup can only hold so much before it overflows. When it does, we must choose to let it continue to fill or dump out the entire glass and pour a new one. Those who refuse to empty their glass often grow frustrated and resort to negative reinforcement to change aspects of their lives.
By emptying your cup, you allow your mind, body, and soul to take in more of the growing world and the knowledge it has to offer. You can grow with the world, come to understand it, and live harmoniously with it, or you can grow stale like a boulder in a fast-moving river. Knowledge exists for us to grow. We choose our paths in life. There are those who come from nothing and, with the guidance of knowledge through books, online material, and people, become leaders of society. Knowledge is everywhere. Discipline yourself to understand it, vet the information to fit your life and the trajectory you desire, and chase your dreams.
